Care & cleaning

A rug built to last deserves care that keeps it that way. Most of it is simple. Here is what to do, and when.

Day to day

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Suction alone is enough for wool. Rotate your rug once or twice a year so it wears and fades evenly. This matters most in bright rooms.

Spills

Blot at once with a clean, dry cloth. Never rub. Work from the edge of the spill toward the center. For most spills on wool, cold water and patience are all you need. Skip bleach and harsh cleaners. They strip natural fibers and small-batch dyes.

Shedding and sprouting

New wool sheds. It settles within a few months of regular vacuuming. If a loose tuft sprouts above the pile, trim it level with scissors. Pulling it can open the weave.

Deep cleaning

Every two to three years, have your rug cleaned by a specialist in handmade rugs. Steam cleaners and machine washing are built for synthetics, not hand-knotted wool.

Rug pads

A pad extends the life of any rug. It keeps the weave from grinding against the floor, holds the rug in place, and adds a softer step.
